Dorothy W. Smyth

Dorothy W. (Mrs. William) Smyth, a long time resident of Niobrara County died at her home in St. Cloud, Fla., September 8.

Mrs. Smyth, 85, was a native of Maryland, being born January 14, 1895, to Judge and Mrs. Wallace C. Watson. She married William H. Smyth in Douglas. They were both homesteaders in the Hat Creek area. She graduated from St. Mary's college in Maryland and taught school in Niobrara County in early 1900 and also taught at Fort Yates, N.D. Mrs. Smyth was an accomplished musician and artist. She and her later husband had spent their winters in Florida and summers on their ranch in the Lusk area.

Rosary was last Sunday at Peet Mortuary Chapel and Mass for Christian Burial was held Monday at St. Leo's Catholic Church with the Rev. Bernard Bianco officiating.

Minerva Watson was organist with Marilyn Cockreham singing "How Great Thou Art." Active casket bearers were Ted Jones, Hobart Cockreham, Jim Wasserburger, C. W. Abell, Richard Grisson, and Bill Abell. Honorary bearers were Everett Thomas, Bill McDaniels, Henry Wasserburger, Jr., Gene Lenz, Loren Walker, Thomas Watson and Paul McDaniel. Interment was in Lusk Cemetery.

Mrs. Smyth was preceded in death by her husband, William and one son, Samuel.

She is survived by a daughter Mary Virginia Abell of Florida, two sisters, Mrs. E. J. Gaupel and Miss Mary Ellen Watson, both of Arlington, Va., one brother, Thomas E. Watson, Baltimore, Md., six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
