Martha H. Thompson

Martha H. Thompson was born September 20, 1913 to Oscar and Hannah Carlson, on the homestead west of Douglas. She attended school in a 1-room building, built by her father; it was called the "White Pigeon." She graduated in 1929, when she was 15 years old, and went to Normal Training for 1 year. She taught school in Douglas for 4 years before marrying Leo L. Thompson, June 9, 1935. They moved to Lance Creek where Leo worked in the oil fields. They later moved to the ranch, living on the Rochelle Place with Jim and Harriet Thompson for 3 years. Then Leo and Martha purchased the Bushnell Place. Later they built a home closer to the Lance Creek on the McFarlane Place in 1968.

She was County Chairwoman, President of Sagebrush Pals, President of the Republican Women's Club, member of the Congregational Church, Historian and Guard for P.E.O., former member of the Country Club, Leader and supporter of the local 4-H clubs, Indian Creek Bridge Club, President of Cowbells Group 1, serving as Secretary and treasurer also, and was joint owner of Ranchers Lumber Company.

She enjoyed and loved her family, playing bridge, knitting, crewel, and needlepoint. She lost the use of her right arm due to an accident, and in 1991 went to live with her daughter Marlee, son-in-law Gary, grandson Sheldon and great-granddaughter Davi Scott, where she lived for 6 years. She was also living in Life Care and the Lusk Nursing Home for some time and then in February 2000, she went to live with her granddaughter, Stephanie Smith and her family; Mike, Shatto, and Shilo.

Martha loved family and friends. She enjoyed entertaining. She cooked for sheep shearers and ranch hands for many years. She was a hard worker and always enjoyed working in the yard and cooking. She loved playing Bingo with the family. She most enjoyed riding around town, frequently stopping to visit some of her friends along the way. She would point out to and name everyone's house of those who were currently living there and those of the past. She truly enjoyed the visit to the ranch last week in Lance Creek. Mrs. Thompson passed away on Thursday June 14, 2001, in Lusk, WY.

Survivors are her daughter Marlee Scott, husband Gary, son Moose Thompson, and wife Patty, grandchildren Chris Scott of Denver, CO, Stephanie Smith, husband Mike of Lusk; Shad Thompson of Kansas; Tori Thompson Pierce of Texas and Rachelle Ankle of Denver, CO. Her great-grandchildren Davi Scott, Shatto and Shilo Smith, Shaundra and Shawn Thompson, all of Lusk and several cousins and nieces.

Her husband Leo, her brother Irving Carlson, parents Oscar and Hannah Carlson, grandson Sheldon Scott, niece Marty Akers and her nephew Frankie Thompson preceded her in death.

Martha loved all of her family, friends and life. She made life worth living with her smiles, her hugs and her kisses and being herself made life worth living for.

To all of you who came to visit her - THANK YOU, she truly loved the visits. Thank you Faye for all your visits and kindness. Mom will live in our hearts forever, just as we all will miss her. Her kindness, love and generosity touched so many lives, and she will never be forgotten.

Thank you Mom, for all that you were - "THE BEST!"

A funeral service was held Monday, June 18, 2002, at 1:00 pm at the Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home in Lusk with Pastor Tom Stock officiating. Interment followed in the Lusk Cemetery. A memorial has been established to P.E.O. Chapter I Lusk, WY or to Lusk E.M.S.
