Alva C. Smith, 70 Dies Suddenly Visiting in California

Alva C. Smith, 70, a resident of Wyoming for the past as years died suddenly at the home of his son, Merrill at Bekersfield, Calif., on Thursday, Nov. 10 from a cerebral hemorrhage.

Mr. Smith left Lusk only a few weeks ago to spend the winter with his son and wife. He was with them last year and enjoyed the warmer climate so much that he was anxious to return again this year.

The remains were brought back to Lusk arriving on Tuesday and were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Smith. Arrangements are in charge of the Peet Mortuary.

Alva C. Smith was born July 20, 1879 near Ferguson, Iowa, the son of David and Sarah Smith. His father died when he was a small boy. On March 6, 1907 he was married to Maude Lowery at LaMoille, Iowa and they are the parents of seven children. Mr. Smith was also the father of a daughter, Dora, by a former marriage. She resides in Marshalltown, Iowa.

The family moved to Wyoming in 1916 and located on a farm near Keeline. Then in 1918 they moved to the present ranch home near Lusk. Most of Mr. Smith's life has been spent in farming.

His wife preceded him in death on Oct 31, 1947. He was a member of the Baptist church and the Rev. H. T. Clark will officiate at the funeral service which will be held at the Peet Chapel on Friday, Nov. 18 at 2:00 p.m.

Survivors include his three sons Avery of Wendell, Idaho; Earl of Marshalltown, Iowa and Merrill of Bekersfield, Calif., and five daughters, Elsie Christian of Hat Creek; Lucille Walter of Node; Opal Boyd of Lance Creek, Ellen Hiatt of Aspen Colo., and Dora of Marshalltown, Iowa. Two brothers, John of Marshalltown and Charles of Valley Springs, S. Dak., and one sister, Mrs. Mamie Wheeler of Marshalltown, Ia.

Burial will be made in the Lusk cemetery beside his wife.

Last Rites Held For Alva C. Smith

Last rites for Alva C. Smith were conducted from the Peet Chapel on Friday afternoon, Nov. 18 by Rev. H.T. Clark, pastor of the First Baptist Church.

The songs, "God Be With You 'Till We Meet Again", "Evening Prayer" and "Where We'll Never Grow Old" were sung by Mrs. Edna DeCastro and Mrs. Anita Culver accompanied on the chapel organ by Mrs. J.P. Watson.

The casket bearers were Joe McConaughey, Frank Taylor, Roy Beard, Anthon Hansen, Harry Cornell and Claude Parmely.

Interment was made beside his wife in the Lusk cemetery.

Mr. Smith died suddenly at the home of his son, Merrill Smith of Bakersfield, Calif., on Nov. 10 at the age of 70 years. Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Smith accompanied the remains back to Lusk. Other children here for the services were, Ellen Hiatt of Aspen, Colo., Earl Smith of Marshalltown, Iowa; Lucille Walter, Node; Opal Boyd, Lance Creek; and Elsie Christian of Lusk. The only one of his seven children unable to be present was a son, Avery Smith of Wendell, Idaho. A sister Mrs. Maymie Wheeler and husband of Iowa were also here.
