Hubert Surratt Dies In Truck Crash Sunday

Hubert Surratt, 23, was fatally injured in a truck collision, about 20 miles north of Wheatland, Sunday night at 9:00. The truck in which he was riding skidded directly in front of an oncoming tanker. Mr. Surratt formerly operated a taxi and school bus here.

The injured man was rushed to the Wheatland Hospital and lived until 1:00 a.m., Monday. Elmer Everhart of Pine Bluffs, driver of the truck in which Surratt was riding, had not regained consciousness yet Tuesday. He was in a serious condition and it was not learned Wednesday what his latest condition was.

Mr. Surratt had brought his family and their furniture to Lusk from Cheyenne earlier Sunday. Mr. Surratt has been taking a beautician course and was planning to locate in Lusk. He was returning to Cheyenne with the trucker to take his final examination, and the following week would have take the State examination at Casper. The two men had been able to return Sunday night by the Orin route.

Mrs.Surratt is the former Helen Stigle. The couple have two sons, Anthony, 2, and Ronald, 1. Also surviving Mr. Surratt are his father, three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were to have been held in Lusk Thursday afternoon, but weather conditions are such that they have been indefinitely postponed.

Funeral Services Held for Hubert Surratt on Friday

Funeral services for Hubert Surratt, victim of a truck accident, were held from the Peet Chapel on Friday afternoon, Feb. 11.

The service had been set for 2:00 p.m. but was held up waiting the arrival of relatives who were enroute here from Nebraska and was conducted at 4:15 with Rev. Lawrence P. Juell officiating.

Miss Bessie Lumsden, Mrs. D. F. DeCastro and Mrs. C. E. Marvin sang "Good Night and Good Morning" and "Higher Ground" with Mrs. J. P. Watson as the accompanist.

Military honors were conferred at the grave by the members of Wieten-Dupes Post No. 4 of the American Legion.

Casket bearers were Bryan Burge, Paul Heany, Ray Taylor, Garry Paisley, Joe Andrews and Gerald Lincoln.

Hubert Thomas Surratt was born at Tecumseh, Nebraska, June 9, 1925, the son of Alfred and Vina Mae Surratt.

He enlisted in the U. S. Army Signal Corps at Lusk, Wyo., on Jan. 3, 1944 and was given his discharge Nov. 30, 1944 and later served in the National Guard.

On June 15, 1946 he was married to Miss Helen Irene Stigle of Lusk and they are the parents of two small sons, Anthony Wayne and Ronald Gene. The couple lived in Lusk for a time where Mr. Surratt operated a school bus and a taxi. Later they lived in Cheyenne but were returning to Lusk to make their home when the fatal accident occurred which took his life. He had brought his household goods, and family to Lusk on Sunday, Feb. 6, and was returning to Cheyenne in the truck with which the trip to Lusk had been made earlier in the day, when the truck skidded directly in front of an oncoming tanker. He received head injuries from which he died at the Wheatland hospital at 1:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7.

Besides his wife and small sons those surviving are his father, Alfred Surratt of Lyman, Nebr.; three sisters, Mrs. John D. Walker of Shenandoah, Iowa; Mrs. J. L. Masur of Sidney, Nebr., and Mrs. Arthur Spath of Lyman, Nebr.; and three brothers, Wilbur and Kay of Lyman, Nebr., and Gilbert of Scottsbluff, Nebr. He was preceded in death by his mother and two brothers.
