Jennie Bass, longtime Lusk teacher dies at 89

The funeral for Jennie Bass, longtime teacher in Niobrara County, was Saturday morning at the Peet Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. John Gerberding of Casper officiated.

Jennie was born Jan. 25, 1888 at Centerville, S.D., and died Jan. 5, 1978 at the Natrona County Memorial Hospital in Capser.

She homesteaded near Van Tassell in 1911 and taught school around Van Tassell and north of Lusk. She moved to Lusk in 1921 and taught school here for 25 years. She was then employed in the county superintendent's office until her retirement in 1957.

In 1914 Jennie married Louis J. Bass in Centerville.

Mrs. Bass was a member of the Retired Teachers of America, B.P.W., Niobrara Chapter No. 26 O.E.S., Daughters of the Nile and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a charter member of the Federated Women's Club and also belonged to the Sons of Norway, Cow Belles and the Niobrara Senior Citizens Center.

She is survived by one son, Gene of Glendo; one brother, Archie of Peoria, Ill.; one sister, Alice of Chicago, Ill.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband who died in 1970.

The organist was Minerva Watson, the soloist Mark Lohr. The songs were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beyond the Sunset".

Honorary pallbearers were G.L. Pfeifer, Otto Klemke, Henry Stiles, C.E. Marvin and Menno Kaan.

Pallbearers were Harold Rogers, Ed Boner, Leslie ZumBrunnen, Julius Peterson, Robert Vollmer and N.H. Wellman.

Interment was at the Lusk Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the Niobrara County Senior Center.
