Funeral services for Ruth L. Smith, 77, will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007 at the Douglas Baptist Church in Douglas with Pastor Roy Phillips officiating. Interment will be in the Douglas Park Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Douglas Baptist Church.

Ruth Smith, a resident of Douglas, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2007 at the Douglas Care Center in Douglas.

She was born Feb. 20, 1930, on the Leonard family homestead south of Shawnee, the daughter of Edward George "Ted" and Susan Olive (Leebrick) Leonard. The family moved into Douglas in 1943. She attended school in Shawnee, high school in Douglas and college at the University of Wyoming in Laramie and Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb. to become a teacher. She taught at schools in rural Converse and Natrona counties in Wyoming and rural Morrill County in Nebraska. She was a homemaker as well as running the Douglas Motel for 38 years with her husband.

In 1951, she met Ed Smith and they were married in a private ceremony at the First Presbyterian Church in Cheyenne. To this union were born a son and a daughter.

She enjoyed crocheting, cooking and working with people. She was a Senior Companion for many years and enjoyed visiting Michael Manor/Douglas Care Center to read the Bible to residents who wanted to listen. She enjoyed the outdoors and the mountains.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years; her son, Gordon Smith and friend Terri Smith of Douglas and her daughter, Barbara Crofutt and husband, Dave of Lusk; grandchildren, Debbie Walker and husband Ric of Casper, Keith Crofutt and wife, Heather of Chadron, Neb., Megan Kubinski and husband, Shawn of Hopkins, Minn., and Laura Smith of Brookings, S.D.; and great grandson, Tony Will of Hopkins. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Ransdall and husband, Everett of Grand Junction, Colo.; brothers, Ed Leonard of Douglas and Sam Leonard and wife, Lola of Carlsbad, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Lt. Col. Lee O. Leonard.

Serving as pallbearers will be Ron Grohs, Levi Grohs, Jason Pierce, Adam Phillips, Aaron Pauli, and Jeff Kirk.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Charles Faulconer, Earl Stroud, Frank Burrell, Raymond Tibbs, and all her many friends.

Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12 Noon.

A memorial to the Douglas Baptist Church Missions Fund, 135 Pearson Road, Douglas, Wyoming 82633 would be appreciated by the family.
