E. Floyd Deuel dies

E. Floyd Deuel, 84, son of Kirtley area pioneer settlers, died in Cheyenne at his home Dec. 15. Funeral service was held Dec. 17 at Schrader Funeral Home in Cheyenne.

E. Floyd Deuel was born June 10, 1894, at Kirtley, Wyo. His parents were John and Miriam Deuel, pioneer settlers who had migrated from Des Moines, Iowa, to the Lusk area in 1888.

His grade and high school years were spent in Harrison, Neb. Deuel was a wrangler at the famous O-10 ranch located near Jay Em, Wyo. On May 23, 1917, he volunteered his services in World War I with Wyoming's own company, the 116th AM train. He saw service in France for two years and was discharged in 1919.

Following the war he was a student at Barnes Business College in Denver and graduated with an accounting degree. He was employed in the Bank of Van Tassell, Wyo. until the time of its closing and then assumed the position of receiver of the bank.

For 10 years he held the office of city clerk and treasurer of Lusk. Deuel then went to Cheyenne in March, 1944, where he was an examiner for the late Norris Hartwell and the current state examiner, Dwight Bonham. He also worked for the late Charles Morgan who was the state treasurer for many years.

Deuel was a past master of Harmony Lodge No. 24 AF & AM and past patron of Niobrara Chapter No. 26 OES of Lusk.

When the Wyoming Society of Mayflower Descendants was established he became a charter member. He also held membership in the Thomas Jefferson chapter of the Sons of American Revolution in Topeka, Kan., and was a member of the Royal Arch Masons in Hiawatha, Kan.

He served as the first adjutant of the American Legion Post No. 1 in Van Tassell and was later its commander.

He is survived by his wife, Zillah Belle; a daughter, Mrs. John Schmidt of Cheyenne; two grandsons, David Schmidt of Aschland, Montana and Michael Schmidt of Cheyenne; three great grandchildren and a brother Lee A. Deuel of Wheatland.

The Rev. Stanley Guille officiated at the funeral, cremation was in Denver. Friends who prefer may contribute to the Cheyenne Animal Shelter.

Note: The Pleasant Ridge Cemetery records in Kirtley, Wyoming have the following entry: "(E. Floyd) Frank Deuel ashes in 1978 front of stone" next to the graves of Louisa A. Deuel and Zebulon G. Deuel.
