Joe Allen Dies Of Heart Attack In Texas Saturday

Joseph "Joe" Smith Allen, a former Lusk resident who was living in Snyder, Texas died Saturday of a heart attack. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Mr. Allen came to Lusk in 1949 from his home in Wilkinsburg, Penn. While in Lusk he was employed at the Midwest Hardware and at the Ben Franklin Store. He was an active member of St. George's Episcopal Church of Lusk. He served on the Executive Committee of the church here. Mr. Allen served as the treasurer of the Lusk Commercial Club.

Prior to the fatal heart attack he had suffered two previous attacks. He had one attack not long before leaving Lusk and another since moving to Texas.

Mrs. Ruth McBirney of Lusk is Mr. Allen's daughter. She left Lusk Monday and flew to Pennsylvania from Cheyenne. Other survivors include his wife; another daughter, Mrs. E. C. Harper of Snyder, Texas; a son, Joseph, Jr. of Wilkinsburg, Penn.; a step-son, Harold Kanaver, of Pennsylvania.

SERVICES FOR JOE ALLEN HELD IN WILLIAMSPORT,PA, WEDNESDAY, JAN 19

Joseph S. Allen, 62, formerly of Lusk, and father of Mrs. Barney McBirney of this city, who resided in Snyder, Texas for the past seven months succumbed to a heart attack Saturday afternoon, January 15th. The deceased was stricken while at work and was taken by ambulance to a Snyder hospital at 4:00 p.m., where shortly after his arrival there, he was pronounced dead by Dr. Thomas Hartley, under whose care Mr. Allen had been since going to Snyder.

The deceased had suffered only one previous attack which occurred in June 1954, while he was still residing in Lusk.

Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m., Monday from St. John's Episcopal church in Snyder, Tex., with Rev. William Boyd officiating. The remains then were shipped to Williamsport, Pa., where concluding rites were held at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the Episcopal church in that city. Interment was made at Williamsport, Pa., near the place where he was born on November 12th, 1882.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen moved to Lusk in 1949 from Wilkes-Barres, Pa., and at that time was employed at the Midwest Hardware. Later he was employed at the the Ben Franklin store. During his residence in Lusk, he was active in St. George's Episcopal church and served on the executive committee. He also served as treasurer of the Lusk Commercial club. Mr. Allen was a member of the Masonic lodge at Cambridge, Mass. Mr. and Mrs. Allen left in June 1954 for Snyder, Texas where they were making their home at the time of his demise.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruth Allen, Snyder, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Florence Harper, Snyder, Texas; and Mrs. Ruth McBirney, Lusk, Wyo.; a son, Joseph Smith Allen, Jr., Kingston, Pa.; one step-son, Harold Knauer, Philadelphia, Pa.; his mother, Mrs. J. Smith Allen, Philadelphia, Pa.; and a brother, John Allen, South Charleston, West Virginia, and a number of grandchildren,

Mr. and Mrs. Barney McBirney drove to Cheyenne on Monday, where the latter took a plane to Williamsport, Pa. She is expected to return home sometime Friday as she will also make the return trip by plane.
