Audrey Frances Smith

A funeral service for Audrey Frances Smith, 90, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 2012 at the Gorman Funeral Homes - Converse Chapel in Douglas, Wyo. with Pastor Tim Ricker of the Frontier Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in the Oregon Trail State Veterans' Cemetery in Evansville, Wyoming.

Audrey Smith died Monday, March 26, 2012 at the Platte County Memorial Nursing Home in Wheatland, Wyo.

She was born Feb. 16, 1922 in Cherry Township, Butler County, Butler, Pennsylvania the daughter of Samuel Clarence and Emma Luella (Allison) Christy. She was raised and educated in the Butler area, where she received her high school diploma. She went to work for Western Union as an operator until 1946. She was married to James W. Smith on June 14, 1947 in the Pleasant Valley Church in Pleasant Valley, Pennsylvania. They farmed near Shelocta, Pennsylvania until March, 1955. They moved to Newcastle, Wyoming, where they established the Pine Grove Greenhouse and Flower Shop. In 1979 they retired and moved to Lusk, Wyo. They did extensive traveling in their fifth wheeler to Arizona, California, Texas, Pennsylvania, and many other places of interest for 25 years.

She enjoyed traveling, reading, gardening, floral arranging, and knitting. She knitted 30 some baby afghans and numerous dish clothes. She made Christmas candy with her family, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

She is survived by her children, Kathy J. (Robert) Kehl of Douglas, Ralph D. (Diane) Smith of Wheatland, Karen S. (Jim) Zerbst of Newcastle, and Richard "Red" (Keta) Smith of Dayton, Wyoming; nephew, Alan Blackwood of Moline, Illinois; nieces, Linda Short of Warsaw, Illinois and Rita Tolson of Moline; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James, on July 9, 2003; and sister, Helen Blackwood.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

A memorial to a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.

The Gorman Funeral Homes - Converse Chapel of Douglas is in charge of the arrangements.
