He was born Alexander Bryant, in Breathitt County, Kentucky. But he ran away from home at a young age. He was taken in by Isaac Back and his wife Rachel Combs. And so, he changed his last name to be Bryant-Back.

He married Mary Elizabeth Back. Her father was John back Jr., who was a brother to Isaac Back.

Alex and his wife moved to Kansas in 1855. They later lived in Oklahoma for awhile. Around 1914, they headed to Kelso, Washington, because their son Levi was living out there. Most of their children went with them. In 1916, Alex went to Wyoming to visit two of his children who were living there--they had stopped and settled there on the way to Washington. But Alex died there.

His wife Mary died in Mount Vernon, Washington three years later.
