Hoy family honors the brand

On November 11, 2015 there was a rather uncommon, but caring gathering of family and friends at the Hoy Ranch in remembrance of Richard Hoy. The family members present were Beverly Hoy, Richard's wife of 64 years, daughters Teresa and Sandy, with her husband Tim, son Ritchie and his wife Yesenia, a large number of grandkids and great-grandkids. They came together to pay their respects and honor something that Richard loved.

When talking to Beverly about what she would like to be said the most about this gathering and having everyone together, Beverly answered "He was a man that loved others and he always helped people, and was always helping me, and I don't think there is anything I could ask more than how he treated me and everything."

There were nine calves that had not been branded this year, when asking Ritchie Hoy about the branding of the calves and the casket he replied "The branding of the casket, that's the perfect decoration for my dad because he loved ranching, loved the ranch, cows and everything, so really that's the symbol that really meant a lot to him. The fact that his grandkids and great-grandkids were here when we branded the casket, and we used the branding irons from branding the calves right over to his casket and stuff was kind of neat."

Ritchie continued about the family history of the ranch, "My grandparents homesteaded the ranch in 1918, so it meant a lot in carrying on the family tradition, ranching and everything, a lot of grandkids and especially the great-grandkids that were there for the branding had never even been to the ranch and most of them, it was their first experience with branding also."

The branding irons were retired and buried with Richard after they were used on the last nine calves and the casket. With the retiring of the branding irons, new branding irons will be used in the future.

This gathering and the funeral in memory of Richard Hoy was arranged by granddaughter Reanna Carroll and husband Heath of Caroll-Lewellen Funeral Home of Longmont, Colo., and assistance by Pier Funeral Home of Lusk.
