Iola "Ike" Violet (LaFont) Dryer
Ike Dryer was born March 26, 1922, the fifth of six children born to Don and Myrtle LaFont. She was raised on Sunnyside Ranch and educated in Creede, Colorado. She was planning a career in nursing but was distracted by a handsome young man named Orville Dryer, to whom she was married on May 21, 1943.
Ike was one of the many women identified as "Rosie the Riveter", working in the Navy shipyards of San Francisco, CA during the remainder of World War II. Moving to Wyoming after the war, Ike and Orville worked together to start a construction company and family. They had four daughters, ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, three dogs, three cats, three construction companies and a pilot car service during their 60 years of marriage. As her daughters grew, Ike became a hairdresser, dressmaker, Brownie and Girl Scout leader, 4H leader, and anything else her daughters needed her to be.
Ike was a lifelong student and took many classes at Casper College. She studied bookkeeping, German, Piano, and sewing. In 1975 she received her long-delayed nursing degree. Her house was filled with books; she knew the names of every bird and plant in Wyoming, and she knew the history and geology of Wyoming better than many college professors. She loved to travel in the United States and kept a bag packed so she would be ready whenever a pilot car job came up. She was also an active volunteer at Holy Cross Food Bank for many years.
Ike was preceded in death by her husband; mother and father; brothers, David, John, and Roy LaFont; and sisters, Leona Intrery and Ellen Vavak.
She is survived by her daughters, Ellen (Larry) Welty, Eileen (Michael) Rissler, Elaine Walters, and Evelyn (David Leather) Dryer; ten grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Her ashes will be placed near her husband in Dell View Cemetery, Manville, WY, and near her sisters at Sunnyside Ranch, Creede, CO.
