Bertilla "Bertie" Darlene Jones

Bertilla “Bertie” Darlene Jones, 85, passed away in her home in Lusk, Wyoming on July 5th, 2017 after a battle with cancer.

Bertie was born to Roger and Bernice (Kint) Cowell on May 7th, 1932. Bertie married Ted Jones in the summer of 1949. Ted and Bertie had six children and raised them on a family ranch north of Lusk, where they lived for 39 years. She graduated from Lusk High School in 1950, and was instrumental in arranging all of their class reunions.

Bertie was very active in the community and was known for her service to many clubs and organizations.

Bertie joined the Royal Valley Homemakers Club in 1951 and was a member of that club and then the Pioneer Junior Club through 1968. During those years she served in every officer position and was County Pennies for Friendship committee chairman.

In 1972 she helped organize and joined the Road Runners Homemakers Club and once again throughout the years served in every officer and chairman position for her club multiple times. She was the Club Fair Chairman for her club for numerous years and kept all of the members organized to serve their shifts of serving meals during Fair week. Bertie served as County Council Treasurer seven times, was County Secretary in 1982, was County Fair Chairman from 1983-1990, and organized and oversaw the County Fair meal serving during those years. Bertie served as County Council President from 1987 through 1990 and again in 1999 and 2000.

Bertie was inducted into the Quealy Club in 1993. This is the highest honor that a Homemaker member can receive. Just this June Wyoming State Homemakers recognized her for 55 years of membership.

Bertie was a 4-H Leader in the Fairview 4-H Club from 1977-1983. She was a Foods, Gardening, Clothing, Home Environment and Introduction to 4-H Leader. From 1984- 1995 Bertie served as a County 4-H Key Leader and County Citizenship Leader. Bertie assisted each and every year with the annual 4-H Halloween Carnival, County Fair, 4-H Achievement Day, judging Record Books and with any other project or activity that the 4-H Council or 4-H members undertook. Bertie was also a 4-H mom for many years.

Additionally, Bertie worked for the Niobrara Senior Center for 28 years, retiring in 2016. She then volunteered at Cozy Corner. In March of 2017 the Niobrara Senior Center was awarded a certificate in recognition of her outstanding achievement in the caretaking of many in Niobrara County with love and compassion. She was always one to care for others.

Of highest priority in Bertie’s life was her family. She and Ted raised four boys and two girls, then were able to enjoy grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They cared for both of their mothers for several years.

Bertie was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Faye Culver, and her husband.

Bertie is survived by her children: Brad (Becky) Jones, Rod Jones, Hollis Jones, Rhonda (Lance) Jones, Jennifer (Tom) Sakala, and David (Christy) Jones; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Mon., July 10, 2017 at the Congregational Church in Lusk. Inurnment was in the Lusk Cemetery.

Memorials in Bertie’s name may be made to the family.
