Carol Joyce Zerbe

Carol Joyce (Hammond) Zerbe, 76, died January 5, 2018 at the Niobrara Community Hospital in Lusk. Funeral Service will be held 1:00 P.M. Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Pier Funeral Home in Lusk, with Mr. Ron Shoults officiating. Interment will follow at Lusk Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Niobrara County Search & Rescue.

Carol was born September 5, 1941 to John and Mary (Seegrist) Hammond in Lusk, Wyoming. She and two sisters, Evelyn (Hammond) Kilmer and Norma (Hammond) Dufek, grew up on the family ranch in the Kirtley community 21 miles northeast of Lusk, Wyoming. She attended the Kirtley School and later graduated high school in Lusk in 1959. She then went to Chadron State college in Nebraska, where she earned her teaching degree.

On January 23, 1960, Carol married her lifelong partner and friend, Robert Zerbe. She went on to teach school in Mirage Flats, Nebraska before returning to the Kirtley area and the ranching life in 1966 where the family raised sheep, cows, and dry-land wheat. After moving to town in 1985, Carol worked at the Lusk Herald. She then worked at the Niobrara County Hospital as a receptionist and coding clerk until her retirement.

Carol and Bob spent many winters going south to Arizona with the camper, always leaving the day after Christmas. While there, they would spend time with Bob’s brother and sister-in-law, Dave and Marcia Zerbe, and enjoyed seeing other folks from Niobrara County who went south for the winter.

Carol enjoyed her family above all else, and would continually give the grandkids her advice, love and attention.

Carol is survived by her husband, Robert, sons Rick (Crystal), Brian (Tracianne), and Craig of Lusk; grandkids Liam, Emma, and Ian; sisters Evelyn (Bob) Kilmer of Valentine, NE, and Norma (Dave) Dufek of Lander.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Hammond, and nephew, Travis Kilmer.
