Samuel Leeling of Kirtley Passes Away January 5

ANOTHER NIOBRARA COUNTY PIONEER CROSSES BORDER TO GREAT BEYOND

Word reached Lusk the end of the week that Samuel J. Leeling of Kirtley has passed away at his ranch home in that community on January 5, 1926.

Mr. Leeling was one of the pioneers of this part of the country and was well known to all the old timers. He was a very industrious rancher and farmer, having settled in the Kirtley country in the early days when farming was unheard of in this section of Wyoming and made a success of dry land farming.

His cheery ways and pleasant personality won him friends wherever he was known and his answering the last call will leave a void in this community.

Samuel J. Leeling was born November 8, 1853 in Van Buren county, Kiowa, and passed away January 5, 1926, being 72 years, 1 month and 23 days of age.

When he was a small child  he moved with his parents to Eddyville, Wapello county., Iowa, where he grew to manhood. There he met Hannah M. Thuennissen and on August 28, 1878 they were united in marriage. To this union eight children were born: Carrie Thayer of Chadron, Nebr.; Edward, of Kirtley, Wyo.; Anna Grant of Crawford, Nebr.; Joseph, of Hat Creek, Wyo.; Herman, of Harrison, Nebr.; Elsie Lewis, of Crawford, Nebr., Two children, Mary E. Peterson, and Leonard, passed to the great beyond some years ago.

In 1887, Mr. Leeling with his wife and five children came west and settled in Sioux county, Nebr., in the valley north of Harrison on Squaw Creek. They resided there for sixteen years, when moved to Kirtley, Niobrara county, Wyoming.

Mr. Leeling was an obedient son, a faithful companion, a kind and loving husband and father. He was a good neighbor, ever ready to  help the needy, and numbered his friends by his acquaintances.

Funeral services were held at the home at 10:00 o'clock, Sunday morning, January 10, Rev. L. W. Bratt of Harrison, Nebr., officiating. Internment was made in the Pleasant Ridge cemetery.
