Leona Imogene Fogle

Leona Imogene Fogle passed away Sept. 8, 2005, at her home in Hanford, Calif., at the age of 99 years and two months.

Leona was the sixth child of 12 children who lived to become adults, having been born to German descent parents, Edward and Magdeline (Vollmer) Lauer. Reportedly, Leona's parents and their first four children emigrated from Russia in 1903 or 1904 and arrived at the area of Aurora and Hamilton, Neb., later moving to a farm on the Cliff Table near Merna in Custer County, Neb., in March of 1906.

Leona was born June 9, 1906. She grew up on the Lauer family farm located in the Eureka Valley area between Anselmo and Arnold, Neb.

Leona married Huey Fogle on Aug. 23, 1943, while Huey was serving in the U. S. Army. The couple joined other Lauer siblings after Huey was discharged from the military and moved to Lusk, Wyo., for a short time. Leona and Huey then moved to Calif., where they lived most of their married life in Whittier. Leona retired from working for Amoco at Southgate and later at Fullerton.

Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Huey, who passed away in Aug. 1991. In 1999, Leona chose to move to Hanford where she could be close to her friends, Ida Perrett and Ida's daughter, Merlene Perret.

Leona is survived by three brothers and their spouses, Karl Lauer, age 96, and his wife Alvina of Broken Bow, Neb., Fred Lauer, 94 and his wife Marie of La Miranda; and Herbert Lauer, age 88, and his wife, Velma of McCook, Neb. Leona is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and two further generations of grand and great-grandnieces and nephews.

Leona was also preceded in death by her parents; six brothers - Gustav, William, John, Albert, Arthur "Archie", and Edmond; two sisters - Victoria Wagner and Nettie Kilmer and reportedly three infant siblings.

Leona requested that memorial donations could be made to a cancer foundation of choice. Many family members have chosen to make a memorial donation to the St. James Lutheran Church, c/o Pastor Steve Blair, 1780 Emma Lee Lane, Hanford, CA 93230.

Funeral services and interment were held in Whittier at the Rose Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary.
