Elizabeth Louise Serres Howland

Elizabeth Louise (Betty) Serres Howland, age 76, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away on April 4, 2001 at the Columbia Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, April 9, at the Church of the Nativity in Harrison with Father Loren Pohlmeier officiating. Interment followed in the Montrose Cemetery north of Harrison, Nebraska.

Betty was born on March 1, 1925 in Sioux County, Nebraska to E.J. and Leona Wisdom Serres. She was the second of six children. She attended a one room country school for her first eight years of school. She graduated from Sioux County High School in Harrison in 1943.

She taught elementary school in western Nebraska for the next ten years. She moved to Washington, D.C. in 1953 and began working for the government. Betty married Lionel B. Howland November 24, 1955, they later divorced in 1961. They had three daughters. She later married Gordon R. Bartell on June 28, 1962 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They had one son and divorced in 1970.

From 1970 until 1973 Betty lived in Nebraska and attended Chadron State College. In 1973 she moved to Gillette, Wyoming where she taught school for Campbell County Schools. In April of 1977 Betty moved to Idaho Falls where she worked at the INEEL.

Betty retired in 1982 after being diagnosed with cancer. She was a cancer survivor for 19 years and passed from this live after a brain aneurism. Betty enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. She was a true friend to everyone. She loved her family and will be greatly missed.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and one son.

She is survived by two sisters, LaVonne R. Pilgrim of Lusk and Cynthia L. Serres of Idaho Falls, Idaho; four children: Linda R. Howland of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Susan J. (Dave) Gilmore of Gillette, Cheryl R. (Brian) Kester of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and John R. (Trina) Bartell of Idaho Falls, Idaho, eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
