Funeral for Nellie Jones was last Thursday in Lusk

The funeral for Nellie Rose Jones was held last Thursday in Lusk at the Peet Mortuary Chapel. She died Jan. 9 while visiting her daughter Betty in Lander. Mrs. Jones was 93.

She was born Jan. 25, 1884 to Mary Dabney Lockett and Thomas Lockett at Valentine, Neb. The Locketts were enroute from Missouri to Chadron, Neb., traveling in a covered wagon drawn by horses and oxen. They stopped at Valentine for the birth.

The family settled in Bordeaux Creek near Chadron where Nellie grew up and attended country school. Nellie liked to tell how country people gathered for protection when the Indians were causing concern, but the people were never bothered by them. After grade school she attended the academy at Chadron preparing to be a school teacher.

Nellie rode horseback to the Lusk area looking for a place to teach, but returned to a school near Chadron and taught until her 18th birthday. She was married the next day, Jan. 26, 1902, to Oscar Jones. Rev. D. J. Clark longtime friend and neighbor officiated.

The couple lived on the White River for a few years and then moved to their homestead east of Red Bird. They lived there 20 years.

In 1925 they bought the old Mert Jones ranch on Lance Creek and Nellie lived there until her death.

Mrs. Jones served on the school board for many years and was the postmistress of the Bright Post Office for 10 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Jones celebrated their golden anniversary in 1952. Mr. Jones died in 1959. Nellie continued to live in her own home with her son Ted and his family nearby.

Nellie loved children and the beauty of sunsets, flowers and wildlife.

She was preceded in death by her husband Oscar, four brothers, three sisters and three grandsons.

She is survived by her sons, Don of Osage, Edgar of Newcastle, and Ted of Lance Creek; two daughters Mrs. Paul McDaniel of Lusk and Mrs. Jim Sable of Lander. Seventeen grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren also survive.

The Rev. Frank Bozart officiated at the funeral. Minerva Watson was the organist and Marilyn Cockerham was the soloist. Songs were "Precious Lord Take My Hand" and "How Great Thou Art."

Pallbearers were Bill McDaniel, Brad Jones, Hollis Jones, Ted Sable, Dick Jones and Rueben Boatright. Burial was at the Lusk Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Niobrara Senior Citizens Center.
