Joe Kane dies Mass celebrated in Edgemont

Jerome "Joe" A. Kane, 63, resident of northern Niobrara County, died at the Weston County Hospital in Newcastle June 26 following a lengthy illness. Kane is well-known in both Lusk and Edgemont where he did business. The Kane ranch is located in Niobrara County near the South Dakota border west of Edgemont, and annually was the site of a barbecue hosted by Kane for friends and neighbors.

Mass and service was celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the St. James Catholic Church in Edgemont with the Rev. James Tunnissen officiating.

Elizabeth Standen played the organ and sang "Ave Maria," "The Rosary," and "A Perfect Day."

Burial was in the Lusk cemetery. Pallbearers were Wrey Martinson, Jack Standen, Bill Glasby, Sam Rennard, Lawrence Danks and Richard G. Pfister.

Rosary service was at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the Vande Bossche Chapel.

Jerome A. Kane was born February 13, 1912 at Wisner, Neb., to John J. and Margaret L. Kane. The family moved to the vicinity of Edgemont in 1926. Here Mr. Kane spent his formative years in preparation for his vocation in the livestock business as a rancher. He was employed by Richard Pfister, Sr. for 13 years and by the sale barn in Lusk three years.

April 13, 1935, Mr. Kane and Marie A. Marking, daughter of William and Patricia Marking of Edgemont, were married. In 1942 they purchased the ranch 26 miles west of Edgemont in Niobrara County, which became their permanent home.

Mr. Kane was a member of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association and was recognized as a prominent and progressive rancher throughout the area.

He is survived by six sons, Kasper Jerome, Edgemont, John G., Thermopolis, William L., Atwood, Kans., Donald E., Newcastle, Richard T., Edgemont, and Gerald M., Kansas City, Mo.; three sisters Mrs. Adeline M. Jackson, Costa Mesa, Calif., Mrs. Genevera Gustafson, Wellimina, Ore., Mrs. Elizabeth O'Brien, Long Beach, Calif.; one brother, Jack J. Kane, Edgemont; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Marie, March 24, 1962, a son, Charles O., July 11, 1965, in the service, five brothers, Michael, John, Leo, Normile and Cyril.
