Harold Kuns Dies As Result Of Accident

City is Shocked When Son of Professor and Mrs. Ford B. Kuns Succumbs to Injuries Sustained in Accident Wednesday; Funeral at Pilger, Nebr., Saturday

Harold Kuns, 10-year-old son of Superintendent of Schools and Mrs. Ford B. Kuns, succumbed at the Lusk Hospital last Friday morning, August 12, at 2 a.m., as a result of injuries received when he was kicked by a horse while riding in an improvised cart with Harry Olinger, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. I. Olinger.

The boys were enjoying a drive in their cart around the streets near their homes, when in some manner the harness broke, and the cart running onto the heels of the horse, it bagan to run and literally kicked the cart to pieces.

Although stunned by blows from the horse's heels, Harry Olinger carried his playmate until Mrs. Paxton Irvine came along in a car and rushed the injured lad to the Lusk Hospital.

Hope was held out for the recovery until about noon Thursday, when his powers of resistance seemed to give away suddenly, and he failed rapidly until the end came from what the physicians in attendance termed as a "delayed hemorrhage."

A brain specialist was summoned from Gillette, and he arrived about midnight Thursday, but he could do nothing to ward off the inevitable.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 o'clock last Saturday afternoon, at Pilger, Neb., the old home of Mr. and Mrs. Kuns. Four small boys were the pallbearers, and the funeral was one of the largest ever witnessed in that town. It took two automobiles to convey the floral tributes of friends to the cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Kuns were accompanied from Lusk to Pilger by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Weymouth. At Pilger they were met by Miss Alpha Porter and her sister, Mrs. Deuel of Lance Creek. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Cates of Lusk, who were visiting in Nebraska, also attended and brought Mr. Kuns' father and mother from Bemer, Neb., to attend the services.

Mr. and Mrs. Kuns will visit for a time at the home of Mrs. Kuns' parents in Randolph, Neb., before returning to Lusk to take up their school duties here.

Harold Kuns was born at Pilger, Neb., on January 9, 1918, and came with his parents to Lusk about nine years ago, when Mr. Kuns took up the superintendency of the local schools. He was in the fifth grade at the Lusk schools. He was a fine young boy and was universally popular with the children of his age, and a a favorite with the grown-folks, who are genuinely grieved at his untimely passing.
