Gladys Marvin

Gladys Marvin 90, died Monday morning at the Niobrara County Memorial Nursing Home after being confined for the past three months in the hospital and home.

She had lived in Lusk since 1929.

Mrs. Marvin was born Aug, 16, 1889, in Hartington, Neb., the daughter of James W. and Ida Slater Rock, one of a family of two daughters and three sons. The family lived at Butte and Newcastle before settling at Niobrara, Neb., where Mrs. Marvin was graduated from high school in 1907.

She attended Wayne State Teachers College and Midland College in Fremont, Neb. She taught school for five years and was bookkeeper with a lumber firm for five years at Niobrara.

She and Clarence (Blonde) Marvin were married May 27, 1918, the day before he left for the army. Upon his return from service in France in January, 1919, the couple took up residence in Concord, Neb., where he had employment with Dolphin & Jones Grain Co. When the firm bought the Lusk Elevator in August, 1929, Blondie was named manager, and the couple moved to Lusk. Eventually Tri-State Milling Co. of Rapid City purchased the elevator, and Blondie retired as manager in 1964.

Mrs. Marvin was a member of the Methodist church in Nebraska and a member and past matron of the Order of Eastern Star at Laurel, Neb. On coming to Lusk she transferred her church membership to the Baptist Church and affiliated with the Lusk Eastern Star, in which she was honored for 50 years of membership in the order.

In the church she was secretary-treasurer of the Sunday school for many years, treasurer of the church, sang in the choir and was active in the Missionary Circle.

She was a longtime member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving besides her husband are a brother, B.G. Rock of Sault Sainte Marie, Mich., and a sister, Frances Martin of San Diego.

A service was scheduled Thursday at 2 p.m. at Peet Mortuary, with the Rev. Maynard Lund, interim pastor of the Lusk First Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will follow at Lusk Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Harold (Bus) Gautschi, Casper; Arthur Dalgarno, Denver; William A. Taylor, Cheyenne; Robert Templeton, Bucky Barnette, Gerald Bardo, Otto Krekeler and L. T. Bonner, Lusk.

Music was to be provided by Mrs. A. F. DeCastro, organist, and Mrs. Hobart Cockreham, vocal soloist.

Memorials may be sent to the Niobrara Nursing Home Fund or the Niobrara Senior Center.
