Dr. Silas J. Medlin

Concluding services were held for the late Dr. Silas J. Medlin at two o'clock Thursday, June 7th, from the chapel of the Quig Funeral Home in Arnold, Nebr. with Rev. E. N. Littrell pastor of the Methodist Church of Arnold officiating.

Enriching the services was the singing of two selections, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden," sung by Mrs. Ray Rickett and Victor Aubla with Mrs. Mynor Smith presiding at the organ.

Interment was made in the Arnold Cemetery with Andrew Nielson, Ed Erikson, Idris Kilmer, Lloyd Pierce, Don Kallenbarger and Francis Schloatman, serving as casketbearers.

Silas J. Medlin, son of Mathew and Sarah Medlin was born July 30, 1866 at Unionville, Mo. and passed away at Lusk, Wyo. June 3, at the age of 89 years, 10 months and three days.

Dr. Medlin began his education in the public school in Putman County, Missouri, later he attended Missouri Wesleyan College and Iliff School of Theology at Denver, Colo. He also took two years of pre-med at Nebraska Wesleyan and received his Doctors degree at a college in Missouri.

On November 23, 1898 he was united in marriage to Mamie Stockwell. To this union four children were born, Lewis E., Theodore O., Laurene K., and Ruth J. Theodore passed away in 1945, and Mrs. Medlin preceded him in death in 1933.

He came to Nebraska in 1893, and joined the West Nebraska Conference in the Methodist Church and spent 13 years in the ministry. His last pastorate was the First Methodist Church in North Platte, Neb. During his second year there he developed throat trouble, and resigned and went into business at Morrill, Nebr. spending eight years there.

After obtaining his Doctor's Degree he practiced for a while in Oklahoma City, but due to his wife's failing health he moved back to Nebraska locating in Arnold, where he resided for 13 years. Advancing age forced him to retire and for the last several years, he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Venus Kilmer and family at Lusk.

He is survived by one son, Lewis E. of Evanston, Ill., two daughters Mrs. Laurene Averett of Los Angeles, Calif. and Mrs. Ruth Kilmer of Lusk; also five grandchildren, James P. Morehouse, Lewis Medlin Jr., Mrs. James Dunkin, Karven Ray Kilmer, and Frederick D. Kilmer and two great grandchildren and other relatives.
