Sherri Hammond Gilderson - Death Notice

Sherri Hammond Gilkerson, age 34, of Cave Creek, Ariz., wife of Marc Gilkerson, daughter of Jack and Carolyn Hammond of Lance Creek, sister of Julie Hodge and Lisa Hampton, passed away in Arizona on Monday, Oct. 30, 2006. Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1:30 p.m. at the Niobrara County Fairgrounds Auditorium.

Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home in Lusk is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Memorial services for Sherri Lea Hammond Gilkerson were held Nov. 4 at the Niobrara County Fairgrounds Auditorium with Pastor Darryl Reeves of Carbondale, Colorado officiating. A coffee followed at the Fairgrounds.

Sherri Lea Hammond Gilkerson, age 34, passed away Oct. 30 from a horse related accident.

She was born in Casper, Wyoming on July 20, 1972 and raised in Lance Creek. She attended kindergarten through eighth grade in Lance Creek, and graduated from Niobrara County High School in 1990.

Sherri was active in the Lance Creek Church, FFA, High School Rodeo Team, and a ten- year member of the Lance Creek 4-H Club, with many honors locally as well as nationally. She loved and showed horses from a very young age. She was a Junior Rodeo Queen at age eight, Miss Rodeo Niobrara in 1992, and was the second runner-up at the Miss Rodeo Wyoming Contest in 1993. She also ran for the High School Rodeo Queen. Showing horses was her passion. She also was a hunter and a fisherman, when the fish were biting!

She attended Laramie County Community College on a Horse Judging Scholarship and was an active member on the LCCC Rodeo Team. She earned a double major with an Associate of Applied Science Degree/Business Administration, and a Horse Management Degree. While getting her degree she did an internship with Dr. Joe Armstrong at La Mesa, New Mexico.

Sherri rejoined Dr. Armstrong after graduation in his horse management program. On Dec. 31, 1994, she married her lifetime friend and partner, Marc Gilkerson. They took employment with the Cheyenne River Quarter Horse Ranch at Hot Springs, S.D. From South Dakota they moved to Glenwood Springs, Colo. to help a friend and then bought a home in Silt, Colo. Sherri and Marc trained and showed horses steadily all over the western United States. The past two years they have spent training working cow horses in the Cave Creek, Arizona area with Jim and Jimmie Paul.

Sherri went on to win the NRCHA Limited Open at the Stallion Stakes, the Limited Open Bridle Spectacular at the NRCHA Derby, and the Limited Open Bridle and the Open Bridle at the Snaffle Bit Futurity.

She is survived by her husband Marc Gilkerson; their dogs Cash and Sparky; her parents, Jack and Carolyn Hammond of Lance Creek; two sisters, Julie (Michael) Hodge of Newcastle and Lisa (Van) Hampton of Casper; nieces: Ashley Hodge of Casper, Whitney and Sarah Gilkerson of Bozeman, Mont. and Taylor Gilkerson of Malta, Mont.; nephews: Kenneth Hodge of Laramie, Zane Hodge of Newcastle, Jack and Thomas Hampton of Casper, Taylor Gilkerson of Bozeman and Shaun Gilkerson of Malta; father and mother-in-law, Mike and M.J. Gilkerson of Malta, Mont.; brothers-in-law Michael (Laura) Gilkerson of Bozeman, Mont. and Matt (Sue) Gilkerson of Malta, Mont.; and many friends.

Sherri was preceded in death by an infant brother, Kurt; her paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Muriel Hammond; and her maternal grandparents, B.T. and Edith Brown.

A memorial has been set up at Lusk State Bank, PO Box 1400, Lusk, WY 82225.

Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home in Lusk was in charge of arrangements.
