Jean Spacht Platts Takes Own Life In Denver Tuesday

Apparently still ill from the nervous breakdown which she suffered last spring, Jean Spacht Platts took her own life in Denver Tuesday.

She had married Frederick K. Platts of Boulder, Colo., a war veteran, on September 1, whom she had met while he was recuperating in the hospital where she was receiving treatment.

Soon after receiving word of the tragedy Tuesday afternoon, Carl W. Spacht, father of Mrs. Platts, accompanied by Mrs. Frank A. Barrett, Miss Marialyce Barrett and Al Lundquist, left at once for Denver.

Mrs. Spacht has not been well for some time and is under the care of a nurse at her home here.

The remains will arrive in Lusk on Thursday, but the funeral arrangements are indefinite, awaiting word from Mr. Platts father-in-law of Jean, who is in New York City on business and had not been contacted yet Wednesday evening.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Platts had intended to attend the University of Denver this winter and it is understood that Mr. Platts left their apartment Tuesday forenoon to go to the University to register. His mother, who was visiting them, went down to do some shopping and Jean was to meet them for lunch. When she failed to appear Mr. Platts and his mother returned to the apartment. Details here are meager, but it seems that in a fit of melancholia she had cut her throat. She had left a note but the contents were not made public.

Jean has grown up here and was a favorite with everyone, conscientious and capable in everything she did, and a faithful worker in the Sunday School of the Congregational Church.

Suffering a nervous collapse last spring, she spent several weeks in Denver receiving treatments, and when she returned to Lusk she seemed in her usual good spirits and was very happy preparing for her forthcoming wedding, and on Sunday, September 10, she and her husband and her sister Muriel and her husband, Lt. Arthur Dalgarno, who were also newlyweds, were given a tea and a gift by some two hundred Lusk friends. Mrs. Dalgarno is expected to arrive in Lusk Thursday.
