James Allen Robb was born on Dec. 7, 1924, on the family homestead southeast of Gillette. He was the second son of Charles "Frank" and Margarete Leuchtweis Robb. He attended rural schools in Campbell County and started working on ranches at the age of 15. He enjoyed working with horses and ranched most of his life. In 1943, he began his service in the Army in a cavalry unit in Kansas and was deployed to the Pacific Theater. He received an honorable discharge in 1946, after spending a year recovering from severe wounds received when enemy shrapnel hit his rifle and he suffered injuries to his right hand, arm and leg.

On Aug. 13, 1950, he married Ardienna Curtis in Gillette. They had six children before the marriage ended.

In 1963, he married Mary (Lyle) Faith and they had two sons. In 1974, he moved his family, mother and two younger brothers, to a ranch near Lance Creek. He was a bus driver for the school district until 1983 when heart problems restricted his activities. They later moved to Lusk.
