Adele Black Smith

Memorial service for Adele Black Smith, ranch woman, was held in Lusk at Peet Mortuary Chapel Saturday, Feb. 26. Mrs. Smith died Feb. 22 at the Niobrara Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Black was born November 3, 1902, at the Tom Black Willow Creek Ranch south of Manville, daughter of Tom and Anna Black.

Her parents bought a home in Manville where she lived with her mother while attending the Manville Grade School. She graduated from High School in Douglas. In 1923 she moved to Cheyenne to help her father who had been elected to the Wyoming Legislature. She lived in Cheyenne for 10 years and worked as society editor of the Cheyenne Tribune.

In 1933 she returned to the ranch to care for her mother. On July 14, 1936, she married Daniel Smith at Harrison.

Mrs. Smith was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church of Lusk. Her life was spent caring for her home. She loved flowers and animals and her dog and cat were her constant companions. She had continued to operate the family ranch following the death of her husband until her own death.

The Rev. Charles Wallis officiated at the memorial. Music was provided by Minerva Watson, organist and Arlo Bowen who sang "Part the Waters" and "In the Garden."

Interment was in the Lusk Cemetery. Pallbearers were Edward Hughes, J. H. Hughes, Harvey Hughes, V. J. Kennedy, Elmer Johnson, and Orman Millikin. Honorary bearers were "all her many friends,' according to the family.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one sister, Mary Richards.

She is survived by cousins, Mylo and Alice Ericson, Mission, Tex., Ivan and Blanche Ericson, Aliester, S.D., Amos Ericson, Hawarden, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Bill Smith, Aztec, N. M., Julia Utz, Bakersfield, Calif., Dora Robinson, Council Bluffs, Iowa; great nieces and nephews, Mrs. Malcolm Hammer, Lusk; Mrs. Jerry Hollon, Laramie, Mrs. Robert Roediger, Glendo, Fred Smith, Wheatland, Howard Payne, Glendo and Clarence Payne, Mojave, Calif.
