Grant Ward

Funeral services for Grant Ward, 76, were held Wednesday, January 10, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the Platte Funeral Chapel in Wheatland with Pastor Ben Whitfield of the Living Church of God officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. in the Manville Cemetery at Manville, with military graveside rites.

Mr. Ward died Friday, January 5, 2001 at his home near Wheatland. Grant was born to Zeb Washington and Ruth (Hockett) Ward on April 2, 1924, at a home ten miles north of Lusk. He was raised at the Dogie Creek family ranch and attended local country schools through the ninth grade. He lived with relatives in Prairie, Mo., and Quincy, Ill. for the next three grades, graduating from Quincy High School in June 1942. He served in the United States Army and then worked for a survey company until his father's health called him to manage the family farm. He married Ella Marie Sides on June 7, 1953 at the Lance Creek Community Church. They were married 47 years and raised five children. Ranching was his main lifestyle; but he also drove the rural school bus and operated a county road grader for Niobrara County until he retired. His hobbies were ranching, hunting, gunsmithing and helping neighbors. He loved his family and was very active all his life in serving the Lord. He belonged to the National Riflemen's Association, American Legion, Worldwide Church of God and the Living Church of God.

Grant is survived by his wife, E. Marie Ward of Wheatland; two sons, W. Scott Ward of Whitehall, N.Y. and George Ward and wife, Kelly of Lovell; three daughters, Ruth and husband Glen Howe of Lovell, Lydia and husband Stan Lefforge of Shoshoni and Earlene Ward of Cheyenne; a brother, Fred Ward and wife, Kit of Lander; sister May Ellen and husband Raymond Smith of Manville, sister-in-law Karey Spaney of Charleston, Ore.; fourteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant sister, Grace Ward, and a brother, Charley Claud Ward.

Serving as pallbearers will be Robert Middleton, Steven Walker, Sam Twitchell, Wade Ward, Bruce Schierwagen, Lester Wintermote, Rueben Brunner and Heath Ward. Honorary pall bearers will be Jeffrey Schierwagen, Jeremy Ward, Charley Kumpf, Criss Ward, Bob Ward, Alfred Ward, and Bill Kumpf.

Memorial to Platte County Home Health Care 1501 16th Street, Wheatland, WY 82201 would be appreciated by the family.

Platte Funeral Chapel of Wheatland is in charge of arrangements.
