Herb Bader

Long-time Livestock Order Buyer and horse lover Herb Bader, 68, died Saturday, May 13, 1995, following a courageous battle with cancer at the Rapid City Regional Hospital. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 17, at the United Methodist Church in Belle Fourche, SD, with Pastor Tom Haggar officiating. Interment followed in Pine Slope Cemetery at Belle Fourche. A prayer service was held Tuesday evening, May 17, at the Church. A memorial has been established to the SD Rodeo Assoc. Make-A-Wish Foundation c/o Paul Gropper, P.O. Box 56, Long Valley, SD 57547.

Herb was born February 28, 1927, at the family ranch north of Timber Lake, SD to Albert and Marie (Pahl) Bader. His early schooling was at the Bader School and Chapel School. He graduated from Timber Lake High School in 1947, and attended Northern State College. Herb was united in marriage to Blanche Garr on June 22, 1947 at Timber Lake. Following their marriage, they made their home on the family ranch 15 miles north of Timber Lake. In 1950, they moved to a ranch three miles north-east of Timber Lake. In 1952, the Bader family acquired the Timber Lake Sale Barn. Herb managed the Sale Barn along with operating his farm/ranch until 1966. In 1967, he moved to the Black Hills, settling in Belle Fourche where he was engaged in the real estate business for several years. He expanded his livestock order buying business which he continued until the time of his death. Herb passed away Saturday morning, May 13, at Rapid City Regional hospital following a courageous battle with cancer.

Throughout his life, Herb enjoyed raising Quarter Horses and every aspect of livestock. At his home in Timber Lake, he built an arena, and spent many evenings enjoying roping with his family and friends from miles around. He especially enjoyed watching his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews participate in their many sporting activities. He was active in the Timber Lake Saddle Club, Community Club and Rodeo Assoc., the SD Rodeo Assoc., 4-H, High School and Little Britches Rodeo Associations. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Timber Lake, the SD Livestock Auction Market Assoc., the Auctioneer's Assoc., and the Loyal Order of the Moose in Belle Fourche. He was the Grand Marshall of the Black Hills Livestock Market's Pitch Players Fraternity, and a member of the Board of Directors for MSI.

Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife, Blanche of Belle Fourche; son and daughter-in-law Butch and Lynn Bader of Lusk; two daughters and son-in-law, Linda Blalack of Rapid City, SD and Suzy and Dennis Betsinger of Lusk; two brothers, Shorty Bader of Mobridge, SD and Ed and Kay Bader of Burleson, Tex.; one sister, Betty Bader of Portland, Ore.; six grandchildren, Casey and Effie Bader both of Laramie, Debra Blalack (Mrs. Dan) James, and Johnny Blalack all of Rapid City, and Tanner and Turner Betsinger of Lusk; two great-granddaughters, Bailey and Rebecca James of Rapid City; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.
