Mrs. Ray Chitwood Dies in Denver Hospital Tuesday

Josephine Nora Chitwood, 49, wife of Mayor Ray Chitwood of Lusk, died at the General Rose Memorial Hospital in Denver on Tuesday morning, May 24, at 3:30.

Mrs. Chitwood had been critically ill for the past two months and was taken to Denver about 10 days prior to her death in the hopes that something might still be done to help her.

Her husband and son and wife Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Chitwood of Lusk, and a daughter, Mrs. Jean Parsley of Los Angeles, Calif. have been with her while she was in Denver. Mayor and Mrs. Chitwood came to Lusk in 1942 from Bayard, Nebr., where Mr. Chitwood took over the management of the Gamble Store and the next year purchased the business.

The remains were brought to Lusk by the Peet Mortuary late Tuesday and the funeral service will be conducted from the Peet Chapel Friday afternoon.

Last Rites Held for Mrs. Chitwood

Funeral services for Mrs. Josephine Chitwood, were conducted from the Peet Chapel on Friday afternoon, May 27, at 2 o'clock with Rev. Lawrence P. Juell, pastor of the Congregatonal Christian Church officiating.

The song "In the Garden" was sung by a quartet composed of George Gibson, Donley Unruh, Mrs. Dorothy Porter and Mrs. Edna DeCastro with Mrs. J.P. Watson as accompanist.

The casket bearers were Guy Wasson, Herb Klindt, Max Bird, Donley Unruh, Nick Kaan and Fred Scott with their wives as honorary members. Members of the American Legion Auxiliary also acted as n honorary group.

Interment was made in the Lusk Cemetery.

Mrs. Chitwood, wife of Mayor Ray Chitwood, died in Denver on Tuesday, May 24, at General Rose Hospital, after being seriously ill for the past few months.

Josephine Nora Rogers was born in Smith County, Kansas on May 2, 1900, the daughter of Sam and May Rogers. She lived as a child in that state and later in Nebraska, where she was married to Ray W. Chitwood on September 30, 1919 at Franklin, Nebr., and lived at various places in that state until 1943 when they moved to Lusk from Bayard, Nebr.

Besides her busband, surviving are a son, Kenneth, of Lusk, and a daughter, Mrs. Jean Parsley of Huntington Park, Calif., and a small grandson of Lusk. Three brothers and four sisters also survive: Charles and George Rogers, Mrs. Frank Snyder and Mrs. Clyde Burnham, all of St. Frances, Kans.; Mrs. Kitty Bonham of Franklin, Nebr; Willie Rogers, Ashland, Nebr., and Mrs. Al Rosenberry, of Colorado.
