SHAWNEE MAN DIES IN ARMY ACCIDENT

Ray Swickhamer, former Shawnee resident, was recently killed at a training camp in Alabama by fragments of a hand grenade.

Swickhamer was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Swickhamer, now of Douglas, but former long-time residents of the Shawnee community, was only a few months past 18 years of age.

According to the wire received, he died in the station hospital at Fort McClellan, Ala., from wounds received when accidentally hit by fragments of a hand grenade. No further details of the tragedy were received.

The parents requested that his remains be shipped to Douglas and this is being done and he will be accorded military funeral services.

Ray Swickhamer was born at Shawnee on June 7, 1925. He attended the Shawnee schools, graduating from the high school there in 1942 with scholastic honors. He attended the Wyoming University a year.

On June 24 of this year, less than three weeks after his 18th birthday he was accepted in the United States Army. He was a volunteer for early induction and had nearly finished his training at Fort McClellan as a member of the infantry branch.
