Funeral Services For H. B. Card Held in Cheyenne

Funeral services for Harry B Card, 86, prominent rancher of Lusk and Manville, were held Friday morning, February 21 at 11 o'clock at the Schrader funeral home in Cheyenne.

The Rev. C. C. Hoyt, pastor of the Methodist church officiated at the service with members of Harmony Lodge No. 24 A. F. & A. M. of Lusk holding the Masonic services at the grave.

The songs "The Old Rugged Cross: and "Going Down the Valley" were sung at the church services.

Six grandsons of the deceased conducted the remains to its final resting place, they are Richard Crosby, Forrest Card, Hillman Tebbs, Leonard Tebbs, Jr., Barton Tebbs and Tony Haskey, the latter being married to Mr. Card's granddaughter.

Interment was made in the Lakeview cemetery in Cheyenne.

The Masons from Lusk attending the service were C. A. Whelan, J. B. Griffith, E. L. McKnight, R. I. Olinger, C. E. Marvin and P. P. Brown.

Born in Ohio

Harry Barton Card was a native of Toledo, Ohio, born there February 16, 1861, the son of Thomas and Harriet Card. In 1878 at the age of 17 years, Mr. Card decided to come west and arrived in Cheyenne where he experienced the usual hardships of being both young and a tenderfoot. He secured employment on various ranches in the territory until he filed on land in the Lost Springs area in 1884.

On April 25, 1888 he was married to Edith May McLaughlin, who had come west with her parents in 1885 in an emigrant wagon train. The McLaughlin's first located near the present site of Glenrock, then filed on a claim near Keeline, and it was here that the romance blossomed. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Card located on a ranch near Lost Springs and as time went on increased their land holdings to become one of the largest ranch owners in this part of the country.

Mr. Card had always taken an active part in the life of the community in which he lived. He was a member of the Masonic Order and a Past Patron of Mariposa Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, of Manville. He was also a member of the Shrine.

For a number of years Mr. Card served as Republican committeeman for Niobrara County.

After having lived in this vicinity for the past 63 years Mr. and Mrs. Card moved from their home in Manville to Cheyenne about six months ago, where two daughters, Mrs. Julia Tebbs and Mrs. Alma Tebbs reside.
