Chris Christensen North Niobrara Rancher, Dies

Chris Christensen, 74, longtime rancher in the Cheyenne River Community died Sunday of a heart condition at his ranch home.

Funeral services will be held from the Peet Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. James Davis of the First Congregational Church officiating. Graveside services will be conducted by the Elks Lodge.

Mrs. Emerson Bonner, Mrs. Lyle Eddy, Dan Christian and Lee Johnsonbaugh will sing, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden" accompanied by Mrs. J. P. Watson.

Pallbearers will be: Jim Reed, Pat Marchant, Glen Hanson, Reuben Boatright, Gene Francis, Albert Glasby, Ed Boner and James Zerbst.

Chris Christensen was born September 27, 1889 in Herning, Denmark the son of Peter C. and Katherine Christensen. He received his early education in the schools of Denmark and was an active member of the Danish Lutheran Church.

He was a bricklayer until 1907 when he came to the United States with his uncle, Mike Christensen of Chadron. He stayed with his uncle and family until 1908 when he moved to Edgemont where he worked for a livery stable, making many trips when the weather was undesirable to take a doctor to an isolated ranch or bring someone into town.

In 1910 he filed on a homestead on Alkali Creek and worked for the Newcastle Land and Livestock Company for years as foreman. In 1917 he entered World War I and served as a sergeant in the 316th ammunition train with the 91st Division in France. June 2, 1924 he and Ann Trapp of Alpena, Michigan were married.

He was interested in community affairs serving on the school board for several years, was a Niobrara County commissioner and a member of the Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife. Ann; one daughter, Mrs. Jean Freeman of Casper; two sons, Fred of San Antonio, Tex. and C. Russell of Cheyenne River; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Dagmar Hahn of Scottsbluff and a sister in Denmark; five brothers, Carl of Forrest, Manitoba, Canada and four brothers in Denmark.

Funeral services were held last Thursday for Chris Christensen,74, long-time rancher in the Cheyenne River Community who died February 2.

The Rev. James Davis of the First Congregational Church officiated, with graveside services conducted by the Elks Lodge.
