Josephine "Jo" Annabelle Spencer

Josephine Annabelle "Jo" Spencer, age 92, of Edgemont, SD, passed away June 6, 2015, at the Seven Sisters Living Center in Hot Springs, SD.

Josephine was born November 5, 1922, in Center, CO, to David "Ross" and Lillie (Anderson) Martin.

Josephine grew up on a farm in the San Luis Valley in Colorado, marrying at a young age, becoming a wife & mother to seven children. The family moved throughout Colorado & Arizona as her husband, Rhuel Potter, was a miner and followed his work, settling in Penrose, CO, when on December 25, 1947, a tragic house fire claimed Rhuel's life. She continued to raise her children with help from her parents and family. In 1955, she met & married, Bill Spencer, a sheep rancher near Mule Creek, WY, where they lived until 1975, then moved to Edgemont. After Bill's death in 1977, Jo went to work at the Rainbow Motel until she retired in the mid-80's. In 1987, Jo met Harold Honadel, enjoying years of companionship, gardening, traveling, and participating in many interests such as Senior Olympics, IOOF Lodge & Rebecca Lodge along with being very active with the Edgemont Senior Citizen Center and her church. She moved to Rapid City, SD, in 2013. Recently in March 2015, Jo was relocated to Hot Springs, SD, to be closer to her daughter, Evelyn.

Josephine was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Floyd Martin & Harold Martin; three sisters: Hilda (Martin) Relaford, Mary (Martin) Higgs & Gladys (Martin) Mann; two husbands: Harry "Rhuel" Potter & William "Bill" Spencer; a loved companion of many years, Harold Honadel; two sons: Larry Lee Potter & Lynn Steven Potter; as well a number of beloved grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces & nephews.

Josephine is survived by her three sons: Clifford (Bonnie) Potter of Coweta, OK; Gordon (Faye) Potter of Rapid City, SD; David (Merry) Potter of Big Horn/Sheridan, WY; two daughters: Evelyn (George) West of Edgemont; Bertha (David) Mages of Spearville, KS; two sisters: Leona Dittmore of Orem, UT; Louise Bellew of Canyon City, CO; as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 11, 2015, at the Assembly of God Church (aka: Community Church) in Edgemont with Pastor K.C. Smith officiating. Interment will follow at the Edgemont Cemetery.
