Augustus "Gus" De Forest was born May 8, 1843, at Madison, Morris County, New Jersey. He died September 6, 1914, in Niobrara County, Wyoming.

Gus was a Civil War veteran, who served in the NJ 7th Infantry, Companies C & K. He enlisted as a Pvt., but was discharged as a Sgt. His occupation listed in his Civil War file at the National Archives was "silversmith." He was likely apprenticed to a silversmith in NJ, but after he married Tillie on March 5, 1868 in Morris County, NJ, they moved to Iowa and then Nebraska where they farmed.

Tillie told her granddaughter Alice Galbraith that Gus's service during the Civil War, which was in major battles that included Gettysburg, ruined his health. Gus died of bladder cancer while he and Tillie were living near family in WY.
