Services Held For Cecil Grant

Funeral services for Cecil Grant, pioneer of Dawes County, Nebr., and former resident of the Van Tassell vicinity, were held Saturday afternoon at the Methodist Church of Crawford and interment was made in the cemetery there.

Mr. Grant, who has children here, was killed instantly last Tuesday morning when thrown from a wagon. He was starting out to feed his stock when the kingpin in the wagon broke. the team ran on the front wheels and Mr. Grant was thrown to the ground.

He was born at Hiram, Ohio July 24, 1875, the son of Will H. and Ella Grant. At the age of two he moved with his parents to Iowa. The family moved to Hayes, Nebr. when he was 12 years old. In 1894 he came west and worked on the R. S. Van Tassell ranch near Van Tassell from 1894 t9 1899. He married Miss May Sides November 23, 1898 and the next year moved to Cheyenne where he was foreman on another ranch of Van Tassell's near Islay.

In the spring of 1908 the family moved to Crawford where he has lived since. He had been ab active member of the Methodist Church since 1918.

Besides his wife, seven of the nine children are living. They are Idabelle Beebe of Lusk; Cecil A Grant, Lance Creek; Ray
Grant of near Crawford; Vera Mae Easter, Ely, Nev.; Ruth Kirby, Smithwick, S.D.; Kenneth Grant, Lance Creek; Jack Grant, Crawford. There are twelve grandchildren. One son, Roy, died Dec. 28, 1935, and a daughter, Gladys, in August 1939.

Also surviving are two brothers, Gail and Roy Grant of near Chadron and four sisters, Mrs. Pearl Vosburgh, Great Bend, Kan.; Mrs. Ruby Sides, Kirtley; Mrs. Ara Jennings, Spearville, Kan.; Mrs. Grace Whitemire, Hunter Okla.

Mr. Grant visited here, at Lance Creek and at Van Tassell numerous times.

Mrs. Easter and Mrs. Kirby were at the ranch at the time of the accident and Mrs. Easter is remaining with her mother for a short time. Most of the children had been home during Christmas. Attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Grant and sons and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Grant and daughter of Lance Creek, Mrs. Beebe of Lusk, Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Sides of Kirtley and John Hanson and Edna and Frank Hanson of near Van Tassell, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Sides.
