August Johnson, Resident of County Since 1906, Takes Own Life Tuesday

Despondency over continued ill health is believed to have prompted August (Gus) Johnson, 69, of Manville to take his life sometime at his home early Tuesday morning. Mr. Johnson had been unable to work for the past several years due to ill health and lately had brooded considerably over his condition. While his family was greatly concerned as to his health, the deceased had not indicated in any manner that he was contemplating such an act.

Sometime early Tuesday morning Mr. Johnson had arose and dressed himself and while the family were still sleeping, stepped outside the house and slashed his throat with a razor. When found, all life was extinct and a doctor, the county coroner and county attorney were called to the home.

Mr. Johnsoon had been a resident of this county for many years. He first came to this section of the state and was in the cattle business with Fred Runser, later in 1906 he homesteaded and continued to farm for several years. At one time he was associated with Charles Burkett in operating a saloon in Manville. He was employed at the Carbon Black warehouse until it closed down two years ago.

He leaves to mourn his passing his devoted wife Anna, and two sons, Vernal August and Sven Arne, all of Manville; a sister, Mrs. Dave Olson and a niece, Mrs. Nellie Hall both of Hartford, Conn. and a nephew, Joe Peters of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Funeral arrangements were conducted from the Peet Chapel at 2 o'clock this afternoon, (Thursday) with Millard H. Marshall officiating at the services.

Burial was made in the Manville cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Burhoop, Fred Kettler, Joe Panno, George Alexander, Lee Stoddard and Darriel Alsup. Active pallbearers were Frank Blankenship, Clarence Pinkerton, Cliff Ludley, Frank McClain, Henry Amend and Adam Bacher.
