Mrs. Mary Cantwell, Mother of Deputy Sheriff Cantwell, Dies After Long Illness

Was 81 Years of Age at Time of Death: Funeral Held Here Wednesday Afternoon

Mrs. Mary Cantwell, mother of Deputy Sheriff T.L. Cantwell, of Lusk, passed away Monday evening at the Cantwell apartment in the Courthouse, following an extended illness resulting from a stroke of paralysis.

Mrs. Cantwell was 81 years if age on the 2nd of March, 1937. She suffered a paralytic stroke in April of 1936 and has been confined to her bed and in a wheelchair most of the time since. She suffered a relapse two weeks ago and had partially recovered, only to sink again into a coma of unconsciousness, from which she did not rally.

The time of her passing was 9:15 p.m., Monday, April 6th. At her bedside were her son T.L. Cantwell, deputy sheriff of Niobrara County, with whom she made her home; and a daughter, Mrs. J.C. Moore, of San Francisco, California. another son, L.H. Cantwell, of Rock Springs, Wyo., was also present. These are the only surviving near relatives.

Mrs. Mary Cantwell, whose maiden name was Mary E. Smith, was born near LaCrosse, Wisconsin on March 2, 1856. She was married to T.C. Cantwell on October 30, 1880, at Silver Creek, Nebraska. Five children were born to this union. Two of these--Alice, later Mrs. W.W. Bundy of Grand Island, Neb., and Nell, later Mrs. Henry Kennedy of Norfolk Neb., preceded her in death.

Her husband, T.C. Cantwell, died of heart trouble in April of 1917, at Norfolk, Neb., where the family lived at that time.

Mrs. Cantwell has resided in Wyoming since 1921, most of which she has lived with her son of the Cantwell ranch north of Manville, Wyo. She moved to Lusk in January of 1937, and has since resided here.

Funeral Services Held Wednesday
Funeral services were held in the Manville Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 28, with Rev. Crissman of the Douglas Baptist church officiating.

A mixed quartet composed of Mr. George H. Grant, Mr. Howard, Mrs. Abdon DeCastro and Mrs. O.M. Rasmussen sang "The Old Rugged Cross." The selection, "Lead Kindly Light" was sung beautifully in solo by Mrs. O.M. Rasmussen.

Pallbearers were L.C. Stoddard, O.M. Rasmussen, Dave Bryant, C.A. Grater, Clarence Pinkerton, and Fred Kettler.

Following the services the body was taken to Denver for cremation, a fulfillment of Mrs. Cantwell's final request. Her ashes will be interred at Silver Creek, Nebraska.

Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Peet Mortuary of Lusk.
