Marianne Naomi Phipps

Marianne Naomi Burdette was born on June 23, 1934 in Minneapolis, Minn. She passed away peacefully on Sept. 21, 2019, in Torrington, with her daughter, Brenda and Laurel Ginkens by her side.

She was the fourth child of seven children born to Louis and Ella (Johnson) Burdette. She attended many different schools as her parents moved around due to her father’s work.

She met a sailor from Nebraska named Bob Phipps at a dance in Portland, Ore., and they were married May 5, 1954, in Vancouver, Wash. They moved to the Phipps ranch, north of Harrison, Neb., in 1955, where they raised three children, Rocky, Tony, and Brenda. They later divorced.

Marianne worked several different jobs including Jantzen Clothing Manufacturing Company in Portland. Her sister, Irene said she could remember all the nice clothes she wore. She also owned and operated the Village Barn in Harrison and worked at the Longhorn Bar. Marianne held a variety of jobs over the years. Anyone who knew Marianne knew her unique sense of humor and she did it her way.

Marianne is survived by her daughter Brenda Phipps-Midkiff (John) of Lusk, son Rocky Phipps (Sandy) of Arizona. Her sister Muriel Irene Meader of Portland, Ore., brother Mick (Ethel) Burdette of Boring, Ore. Three grandchildren Cami (Phipps) Brown, Sam Phipps, Jacob Phipps and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Louis and Ella Burdette, sisters Dorothy Phipps and Carol Swain, brothers Don Burdette and Jim Burdette and a son, Tony Phipps.

A private memorial graveside service will be held at a later date. Marianne loved to read and memorials may be made to the Niobrara County Library Foundation, Inc. in her name. Pier Funeral Home in Lusk is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
