Sheldon Douglas Poage

Sheldon Douglas Poage was born April 23, 1980, to Vernon and Teresa Poage. He grew up on the family farm south of Lost Springs and attended the Shawnee Country School through third grade. After graduating from Niobrara County High School, Sheldon earned his associates degree at Eastern Wyoming College in Torrington and he went on to get his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice at Chadron State College in Chadron, Nebraska.

He was a Park Ranger at Glendo for the summer of 2002 to complete his internship requirements for his degree. He then worked for the Converse County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy. While there, he became a Certified Law Enforcement Officer through the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy.

Sheldon joined his dad on the Wyoming Highway Patrol from 2004-2018. In 2009, Sheldon was honored with the “Larson Award,” given to recognize his acts of heroism for saving a man’s life from a burning truck while off duty.
Sheldon married Janae Crary in 2009 to whom their daughter, Laurel, was born. They were later divorced.

Sheldon married Ammie Murray in 2019 to whom no children were born. They later divorced.

Sheldon worked briefly for Prairie Oil Field Services as their Field Safety Officer until he bought his own semi-truck and started U Lazy Three LLC.

He is survived by his daughter, Laurel, his parents, Vernon and Teresa Poage, his sister, Leah (Eric) Gremm, and their daughters, Jayden and Bailee, his aunt, Janice (Dewey) Baars, his aunt, Darlene (Bob) Thon, special friend, Anna Prince, plus many cousins and close friends.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Harvey and Caroline Knudsen Poage, his maternal grandparents, Lawrence and Rosetta Lewis, his aunt and uncle, Anita and Rick Jassman.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 17th, at the First Wyoming United Presbyterian Church in Torrington with Pastor Steve Kellett officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery. There will be a light lunch after the burial, at the Manville Church, around noon. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the Wyoming Highway Patrol Association to go toward scholarships for Wyoming high school seniors.
