OBITUARY
Richard “Dick” Leroy Price, born January 12, 1938, in Stockport, Iowa, to Howard and Margaret Price, passed away on June 17, 2026, in Casper, Wyoming.
Dick spent his childhood in Humboldt, Iowa, where he developed the easy charm, strong work ethic, and love of friendship that would follow him throughout his life. After graduating from high school, he earned a football scholarship to the University of Wyoming, a place that became central to his identity and the source of many lifelong friendships.
During his years at the University of Wyoming, Dick immersed himself in campus life. He was a proud member—and eventually president—of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, where he formed bonds that endured for decades. He also sang with The Tramps, a barbershop quartet that became a beloved and popular group throughout the region. Among their many performances, one of the most memorable was sharing the stage with Hoagy Carmichael at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, an experience Dick recalled with unmistakable pride.
Dick graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1961 and accepted a position as a biology teacher at Niobrara County High School in Lusk, Wyoming. He also began his coaching career at the junior high level before becoming head boys basketball coach in 1965. The pinnacle of Dick’s coaching career came with back-to-back Wyoming state basketball championships in 1969 and 1970. His 1969 team finished with a perfect 23-0 record, while the 1970 team completed a remarkable 20-3 season. Following his tenure as head boys coach, Dick went on to lead the girls basketball program through several successful seasons.
Over the course of his coaching career, Dick compiled an overall record of 227-139 and earned numerous honors. He served as President of the Wyoming Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association from 1988 to 1989 and was named Wyoming Athletic Director of the Year in 1989. He was selected Absaraka Conference Basketball Coach of the Year in 1965 and 1979 and was honored as Golf Coach of the Year in 1972 and 1989. He was inducted to the Wyoming Coaches Hall of Fame in 1989.
Beyond the classroom and gymnasium, Dick spent decades at the Niobrara Country Club as head golf professional and later as a member of the grounds crew. Anyone who knew Dick understood that the golf course was more than a pastime—it was one of the great passions of his life. Whether teaching, coaching, golfing, or simply sharing stories with friends, Dick found joy in bringing people together.
Above all, Dick cherished his family. He shared 57 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Suzie, the love of his life. Together they built a family and a life centered on loyalty, laughter, and community.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Margaret Price; his wife Suzie Price; his son, Timothy Price; and his son, Richard Price and his sister and brother-in-law, Gayle and Don Denkinger.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Joanne Price; his grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Dylan and Alexa Price; grandson and granddaughter-in-law Jordan and Brooklyn Price; Granddaughters Cami and Antonia Price; Grandson Joseph Price; his great-grandchildren, Max, Silas, Charlotte, and Katalina Price; and his nieces, Darcy, Deniese, and Dana Denkinger.
Dick will be remembered as a dedicated educator, accomplished coach, avid golfer, loyal friend, and devoted family man. His impact on generations of students, athletes, friends, and family members will not be forgotten.
A celebration of Dick’s life will be held at Pier Funeral Home in Lusk WY. on July 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and celebrate a life well lived.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Central Wyoming Hospice of Casper, Wyoming, in recognition of the compassionate care and support they provided.
