Jack Packer of East Texas thought he had already seen his fair share of tragedy in the new adventure novel by Joe R. Landsdale, “The Thicket.” His grandmother died in a farm accident and his parents had just succumbed to a smallpox epidemic orphaning him and his younger sister, Lula. On the way to his uncle’s farm bandits killed his grandfather and kidnapped his sister. With no elders left for miles, Jack must grow up fast and enlist any kind of help he can for his sister to stand any chance of survival.
