Sharyn McCrumb's newest novel is "Prayers the Devil Answers." In 1936 in order to care for her children, newly widowed Ellie Robbins takes the one job available to her - that of her late husband, the sheriff. She must use the force of sheer will to carve out a place for herself in an uncertain future and to take control of her new position. When a condemned killer is sentenced to death, her opportunity to do so presents itself in a way she never expected. There is one task that only a sheriff - man or woman - can carry out: the execution of a convicted prisoner.
