Library News

The Friends of the Library are preparing for the upcoming Annual Book Sale and Ice Cream Social. These events will be held at the library with the book sale beginning at 8 a.m. The Ice Cream Social begins at 11 a.m. and will feature delicious homemade cakes.

Two graduates of Niobrara County High School will be on hand with copies of their recent books. Evelyn Rogina Doussard, Class of 1957 recently released “Dusty Roads.” This book of poetry depicts life and if one word were used to describe this book it would be life. For each poem is of a real person; individual tapestries woven from the threads of those who lived it.

Don West, Class of 1956 will be on hand with his recent release of “Rawhide.” This historical western novel is the story of two young men who left Ohio on a great adventure – a trip west on the fabled Oregon Trail. But, hard work and long hours wasn’t enough to overcome the treachery they found waiting for them in the Dakota Territory. Both of these authors will have copies of their books available.

New for adults is “Quicksand” by Iris Johansen. Forensic Sculptor Eve Duncan is drawn into Killer Henry Kistle’s sick game as she desperately tries to find her missing daughter. Henry taunts Eve with details of the kidnapping and promises to disclose the location of Bonnie’s body.

Other new fiction books are “Bulls Island” by Dorothea Benton Frank, “Dreamers of the Day” by Mary Doria Russell, “Twenty Wishes” by Debbie Macomber, “Santa Fe Dead” by Stuart Woods, “Dirty Money” by Richard Stark, “People of the Weeping Eye” by W. Michael Gear and “The Whole Truth” by David Baldacci.

New non-fiction includes “Twisted Triangle: a Famous Crime Writer, a Lesbian Love Affair, and the FBI Husband’s Violent Revenge” by Caitlin Rother and “Harmonic Wealth: the Secret of Attracting the Life You Want” by James Arthur Ray.

The Lennea Lewis Slagle Children’s Library has this new chapter book, “Captured Off Guard: the Attack on Pearl Harbor” by Donald Lemke. New picture books include “Scoot!” by Cathy Falwell, “Best Friends on Wheels” by Debra Shirley, “Always with You” by Ruth Vander Zee and “Cesar Takes a Break” by Susan Collins Thomas.

“Play Ball!” is the theme for Storyhour on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 and Thursday, June 19, 2008. Storyhour is held each Tuesday and Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. for children ages 3 through kindergarten throughout the year.
