Dale Post Office

Fred Dale homesteaded on the Cheyenne River at the mouth of Alkali Creek (northern Niobrara County) in 1900. The nearest post office was Edgemont so he was instrumental in getting one established in this area and it was called Dale, WY. His daughter, Maud, married Fred Campbell and they lived on the Cheyenne River at the mouth of Robber’s Roost Creek (Pipe Ranch).
Owen Shay and his family lived in a wagon and ran sheep along the Cheyenne River from 1887 till 1900 when they located on the River at the mouth of Hen Creek building a home, barn and corrals. Mrs. Shay was the post master of the Dale Post Office. Anthony “Andy” Sedgwick bought the ranch and livestock from Owen Shay in 1908 and moved here from Colorado. Mrs. Sedgwick served as post master until the Dale Post Office was consolidated with the Spencer Post Office which was established in 1906 at the home of Nelson Spencer up the Cheyenne River a few miles. His wife ran the post office until she died in 1928 and it was taken over by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Bill Spencer. It was discontinued in 1928.
Tom Rennard carried the mail from Spencer to Edgemont twice a week from 1914 to 1918 with horses. From 1922 to 1938 he carried the mail in a motor vehicle.
