Emma Ellen Elder

Funeral services for Emma Ellen Elder, 89, were Wednesday, April 8, at the Converse Funeral Chapel with Rev. Delbert Dick officiating. Burial was in the Douglas Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Elder died Saturday, April 4, 1987 at the Living Center in Griffin, GA. She was born April 28, 1897 near Gettysburg, PA, the daughter of John G. and Sarah (Weigle) Bushey. After completing the eighth grade, she moved with her family to Texas where she graduated with honors from Richmond High School in 1916. She attended San Marcos Teachers College during summer months and taught as a substitute at Beasley, TX for two years.

In 1918 she joined her family in Douglas. She always attended summer sessions at the University of Wyoming and taught 10 terms of school. On Dec. 23, 1923 she married Willard C. Vernon, a World War I veteran who died in 1930.

She taught two terms and then married Roy F. Elder on Dec. 11, 1932 at Keeline. In 1960 they retired from the ranch and moved to Manville, where Mr. Elder died in 1963. In 1968 she moved to Torrington and to Skyview Villa in Guernsey in 1980.

In October 1985 she moved to Fayetteville, GA where she lived with her son until December 1986. She then moved to the Living Center in Griffin, GA until the time of her death.

She is survived by a son, Quentin T. Elder; a sister, Nina B. Park of Oregon, three grandchildren and two great grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; one daughter, Roylyn Alice Elder; and one sister.
