James Bradshaw Griffith, Jr.

Memorial services for Jim Griffith will be conducted at the Congregational Church of Lusk on Saturday, June 30, at 11 AM with Reverend Don Chanslor officiating.

Jim died June 24, 2001 at Sun Health Hospice Center in Peoria, Arizona.

Jim was born to James B. Griffith and Nellie Snyder Griffith on January 13, 1927. He attended schools in Lusk and Cheyenne and served in the Navy during World War II. Following military service he attended the University of Wyoming where he served as president of Sigma Nu fraternity and was a member of Alpha Kappa Phi.

Following his graduation in 1950, he was editor and co-publisher of the Lusk Herald. From 1955 until 1970 Jim served as Niobrara County Republican State Committeeman and held numerous positions within the State GOP.

In 1970 Jim ran for Wyoming State Treasurer and was nominated and elected. In 1974, 1978 and 1982 he was elected State Auditor. Jim was the first to audit mineral production, a practice which spread to other states and continues to this day. He served on committees for two Secretaries of the Interior and played a key role in reorganizing the financial management of the Department of the Interior.

Jim was a past president and Honorary Life Member of the Wyoming Press Association. In 1987, he was named Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Wyoming. Jim was a longtime member of the Lusk Congregational Church and an associate member of the Congregational Church of Sun City. He was a Mason, member of the Scottish Rite, and a Shriner. He was a member of the American Legion, past president of the Lusk Lions Club, and a member of the University of Wyoming Alumni Association.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Dorothy Fitzwater, Polly Tysor and Mary Bruner.

Survivors include Jim's wife Carolyn of Peoria, Arizona; sister Mary Lou Canady of Rancho Mirage, California; daughter Sally Griffith and her husband Jim Pringle of Havorford, Pennsylvania; daughter Laura Bennett of Cheyenne; daughter Lynn Carlson and her husband Mike of Lusk; stepson, Mike McVay and wife Cheryl of Cheyenne; and three grandchildren; Courtney and Griff Bennett, and Jay Pringle.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Niobrara County Library Endowment Fund, P.O. Box 510, Lusk, Wy. 82225

The Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home of Lusk is in charge of arrangements.
