Mrs. Lucy Hunter, Aged 92, Passes Away, Tuesday

Mrs. Lucy Helen Hunter passed away at her ranch home Tuesday morning, March 4, at 5:30 a.m. at the advanced age of 92 years last July 25th.

Mrs. Hunter made her home on the Hunter Hereford ranch with her son, Charles Hunter, and her daughters, Miss Myrtle Hunter and Miss Olive Hunter.

Born in Ashtabula County, Ohio, in 1854, she moved with her parents when a young girl to Winslow, Ill. February 2, 1876, she was married to William Hunter at Orangeville, Ill. She also lived for a time in Clay County, Iowa, and then moved to Dixon, Missouri, where she resided until coming to Wyoming about 1915. The family then purchased the Alex Mashek place southeast of Lusk, where they have resided for the past 32 years and have built up a fine ranch and are the raisers of registered Hereford cattle.

In spite of her years, Mrs. Hunter was always active about the home and had an alert and keen mind.

The remains will be taken to her old home at Winslow, Ill., for burial and will be accompanied by her son, Charles, who will leave on Thursday. No funeral services will be held here.

Life Story of Helen Hunter, Who Died March 4, Is Told

The following record of the life of Lucy Helen Hunter was contributed by her children:

Born in a large farm house near the shores of Lake Erie, in the State of Ohio, Lucy Helen Hunter (nee Hutchins) of New England parents, July 25, 1854. At a very early age she moved with her parents to Northern Illinois, then a comparatively new section, where she grew to young womanhood, attending the public schools and taking an active part in the social activities of the day.

At the age 18 she married William Leonard Hunter of that county.

Hearing of the homestead lands of Northwestern Iowa, they soon decided to venture out in the new land along with other young couples, moving out in the spring of 1873. They began a pioneer life that is history all its own.

In 1896 they moved to near Dixon, Mo., where the family built up a large fruit farm. Then in 1915 the family moved to near Lusk, Wyo., where she was engaged in stock raising, in which she took great interest and helped to build up what is now the Hunter Hereford Ranch.

She was a wise counselor, a great reader, a close observer, and a very acute memory, so possessed a great fund of information.

Living down through four war periods, she had a keen knowledge of human values, retaining her mental faculties until the very last passing away at her country home Tuesday morning, March 4, 1947, with her three children and the trained nurse, Mrs. Jane Geiser, who so kindly helped to care for her during her short illness.

She leaves to mourn her passing, one sister, Miss Olive Hutchins of Lynn Haven, Florida; one son, C. E. Hunter, and two daughters, Myrtle and Olive Hunter of Lusk; two grandsons, Charles Bryant of Riverton, Wyo., and Edward Bryant of Hawaii, and two great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter, and many, many friends. Her husband and daughter Pearl preceded her in death.

Funeral services were conducted in the Congregational Church at Winslow, Ill., and she was laid to rest beside her husband in the family plot of the Winslow cemetery.
