Walter Kant

Walter Kant, age 83, of Lance Creek passed away on Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at the Poplar Living Center in Casper.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday at the Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home in Lusk. Pastor Gary Walker of the Lance Creek Community Church will be officiating. Interment will follow in the Lusk Cemetery.

Mr. Kant was born on Feb. 9, 1918 in Guernsey to William F. and Estelle Runser Kant. He was reared on the family farm at Lost Springs, the oldest of six children. His mother passed away in 1933. Responsibility was learned early by all of the family members. Walt joined the CCC's as soon as he was old enough to enlist. This was a good learning experience taking advantage of all the school and training offered. Walt put this training to good use throughout his married life.

He married Susan Borner of Cody on Aug. 4, 1940. Four children were born to this union, Michael, Patrick, Billy and Jerri Lynn.

Walt worked for the Union Pacific as Road Master's Clerk at Green River for several months before enlisting in the Army. He served in the Transportation Corp during World War II. They owned and operated the General Store and Post Office in Lost Springs during the war. After peace was won in 1946, the family moved to Lance Creek. Walt and his sister Emmy Lou purchased Roy Lee's Store and Locker Plant in the Gateway area. They renamed it K&K Market. In 1950 Emmy Lou purchased his interest so Walt could move on to other interests, including the service station, bulk fuel plant, oil field construction and various oil properties.

He is survived by his wife Susan of Lusk; three children, Michael and his wife Linda of Hubbard, Ore., Pat and his wife Ruby of Douglas and Bill of Chadron, Neb.; two sisters, Pauline Werdin of Germantown, Md., and Emmy Lou Huff of Douglas; his grandchildren, Bradley, Wally and his wife Toni, Mike Jr. and his wife Stephanie, Susan Ferguson and her husband Mitch, and Marshall; and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Jerri Lynn in 1996, two brothers, Richard Kant and a brother Bill who was lost in bombing raids over Germany in WWII, and one sister, Edith Delahunty.

A memorial has been established to the Lance Creek Community Church or Cozy Corner Inn. Donations may be sent to the Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home, PO Box 569, Lusk, WY 82225.
