Bob Massie Dies Sat.; Funeral Being Held Wed.

Robert L. (Bob) Massie, 79, died in the Niobrara County Hospital Saturday. Mr. Massie, who had been ill in recent years, fell at his home last Thursday morning and was taken to the Hospital. He suffered numerous cuts and bruises and some burns as he fell on a floor furnace.

Mr. Massie was director of the Niobrara Welfare Department from 1942 until his retirement in 1955.

Funeral services are being held from St. George's Episcopal Church this Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dean Addington officiating. Mr. Massie had long been an active member of the church.

Mr. Massie was born in Spearfish, S. Dak., September 1, 1888, to Mr. and Mrs. Wylie E. Massie, Spearfish pioneers.

December 3, 1912 he and Grace Mabel Caffery were married in Belle Fourche, S. Dak. The couple ranched in the northeast Wyoming and in 1922 he became Superintendent of Schools at Sundance, Wyo., a position he held until 1930. He taught at various schools in northeast Wyoming until 1942 when he came to Lusk as Welfare Director.

In 1919 he lost his left hand in an accident in a corn shredder, but became very adept with his remaining hand.

On June 3, 1954, he and the late Emily Marie Deetjen were married. After Mrs. Emily's death he and his former wife were remarried. Mrs. Grace Massie died last month.

Survivors include three sons, Robert R., Vancover, Wash., Clifford F., Rapid City, S. Dak., Glenn C., Kennewich, Wash.; two brothers, S. Colin, Albuequerque, N.M. and Walter R., Belle Fourche, S. Dak.; and 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Six of his grandchildren are serving as casketbearers. Burial is being made in the Lusk Cemetery.

Mrs. Walter Fernau, Mrs. Bob Bramlet, Larry Lyon and Dr. Richard Collins are singing "Abide with Me", "Now the Day Is Over" and "Nunc Dimittis." Mrs. J.P. Watson is organist.
