Joseph O'Brien

Joseph O'Brien, area rancher for 51 years, died April 12 in the Niobrara County Nursing Home. Memorial service was April 16 at the Peet Mortuary Chapel of Lusk with the Rev. Bernard Bianco officiating.

Minerva Watson was organist and Joy Kaltenheuser sang "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Joseph O'Brien was born Nov. 10, 1897, at Williamstown, Mass., the son of John and Mary O'Brien. He spent his early life in Massachusetts working in the lumber industry cutting cord wood.

He married Agnes Elser in 1917. They were the parents of two sons, Joe and Robert. During World War I he was employed in the shipyards as a riveter.

He came to Wyoming in 1930 and homesteaded north of Lance Creek spending the rest of his life ranching. He married Cecile Shaffer on Feb. 7, 1938.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and two sisters.

He is survived by his sons Joe of Texas and Robert of New Jersey; a brother John of Florida; two sisters Marie of Massachusetts and Katherine of California; seven grandchildren; great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery. Honorary bearers were his friends and neighbors. Casket bearers were Mr. O'Brien's grandsons.

Memorials may be given to the Niobrara County Nursing Home or Niobrara County Historical Society.
